The Legal Technology Fair hosted the presentation of the report "Future Legal Practice 2020: Emerging Business Areas," which covers the technological trends and latest advances that are undoubtedly the major market niche for the legal profession of the future. Identifying the needs of these realities, as well as anticipating them, may be key to the future of the profession.

For this reason, the General Council of Lawyers commissioned the consulting firm BRAINTRUST to conduct an analysis of the impact of these technologies on legal services, which was presented at this 12th Congress by the dean of the Salamanca Bar Association, Eduardo Íscar, who was responsible for coordinating the report, and José Luis Ruiz, Partner and Director of Innovation at BRAINTRUST. Both were introduced by Cristina Sancho, Director of Corporate Communications, Branding, and CSR at Wolters Kluwer.

Íscar pointed out that the project responds to the legal profession's interest in the emergence of technologies and their impact on the profession, something that is reflected in the 2020 Strategic Plan. The dean of Salamanca pointed out that "we wanted the Congress to discuss technology in depth and for this to be documented so that it could be dealt with in a specific manner, not in general terms," since "there is no single recipe" for applying it.

The reports, he explained, "aim to open up a field of opportunities that can be applied to law firms," he said.

Along these lines, José Luis Ruiz indicated that "the reports have been created for reflection" and, to this end, before starting the project, "threats and opportunities were identified," and then more than 50 entities and more than 1,000 article references were analyzed.

Subsequently, six major areas of innovation were identified:

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Blockchain
  • 3D printing
  • Connected objects
  • Medical innovations
  • Virtual and augmented reality

... which are analyzed in the report by sector.
